Signs You Need to Schedule Duct Sealing for Your Home
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, leaks in the ductwork of homes can account for a loss of up to 30% of the air moving through the ventilation system. That means tremendous energy waste for a house, as well as a decline in comfort. It can even result in damage to the heater and/or air conditioner. If your home has leaky air ducts, the best solution is to call our professionals to arrange for them to seal the ducts. (And before you bring it up, no, you can’t use duct tape to seal the ducts. Duct tape isn’t even used for ducts.)
But before you get to that stage, you have to know that you need help. Because you can’t see your ducts most of the time, you’ll need to watch for other signs to warn you that it’s time to give us a call.
- A spike in heating and cooling bills: Because the amount of air lost through leaks in ducts is significant, it will have a negative impact on your heating and cooling costs. The AC or heater will need to work harder to overcome the loss, and that will mean bigger utility bills. If you can’t account for your more expensive bills, the problem may be the ducts.
- Sluggish airflow: Check the airflow coming from the room vents. If it seems weaker than normal, it may be due to a drop in air pressure from leaky ductwork.
- Moldy, musty smells: Does the air coming from the vents have an unpleasant odor, like mold or the air in closed-in, unventilated space? This could mean that leaks in the ducts are drawing air from areas such as the attic and between walls.
- A drop in indoor air quality: Excess dust and dirt can enter into the ducts through air leaks, leading to more dust and other debris affecting your home’s indoor air quality.
