Ceiling Fans Are Helpful in Winter As Well

During a long summer in Chicago, a professionally installed ceiling fan is an immense help with keeping cool and lowering electrical bills. The movement of air through a space helps to remove the heat envelope from around people’s bodies, and this makes them feel cooler. Thanks to ceiling fans, an air conditioner can usually be set 8°F higher, or even turned off for long stretches, saving energy.

But aside from their decorative function (and many ceiling fans are beautiful to look at), is there anything you can do with a ceiling fan during the cold weather of winter?

Yes! Ceiling Fans Are Beneficial in the Cold!

Modern ceiling fans are built with a switch on them that changes the direction that the blades spin. You’ll find it on the fan’s base. This switch changes the fan from summer mode over to winter mode.

If you look at the ceiling fan from below, blades spinning counterclockwise means the fan is running in its normal mode for hot weather. The blades press air downward to create the breeze that helps make people feel cooler. But if you reverse the fan blades so they turn clockwise, something different happens. The blades push air toward the ceiling, which forces the air at the ceiling to flow down the sides of the room.

Why is this beneficial in cold weather? Because it takes the cooler air from the lower part of the room and forces it upward to push down the warmer air, leading to a better distribution of heat. If your house is like most, it uses a forced-air heating system that blows heated air from vents. This heated air rises to the ceiling, and it can take a stretch for that air to spread downward. The fan speeds up the process, helping to warm rooms faster and better.
